Personality; Beauty is only skin deep, they say.

Diana is undoubtably the most attractive of the girls in the orphanage. On the surface, she's perfection - holding herself elegance and poise, sweetness incarnate if it means she can gain something, it's no wonder at all that she holds the title of "Duchess" in the Red Crayon Society.

Though hers is neither a fair nor just rule.

The minute Diana opens her mouth, the illusion of the beautiful and kind princess falls away. Cruel and manipulative, she's not above taking advantage of people's affections for her if it means she can use them for her own entertainment. Diana is the sort of girl who will turn your own emotions against you. To your face, she will be nothing but conversational and kind. Behind your back she is cutting and brutal, tearing you and all your secrets down. Your affections mean nothing to her - a love letter from Meg, innocent in it's execution - is torn and disgarded callously, insult added to injury as the blame on the unfortunate Jennifer. Worse than that is how far she will go to try to get a reaction out of someone, from stealing a beloved pet to purposefully raising hopes only to dash them against the rocks.

Though smiles are apleanty with this one, hardly any of them mean something genuine. She will cry on cue, smile on cue, and laugh at all the right moments to earn your favor if it suits you. Her nonchalant attitude keeps people longing to be close, but held at any distance she pleases. Her happiness is fleeting and usually comes at the behest of another's suffering.

Afraid of adults, but longing to become one, Diana lives caught between two worlds. Living in the orphanage under the reign of Mr. Hoffman, enduring his suggestive advances, has left her eager to flee from the world that she's been placed in. Her faith in the adult world is all but shattered, no parents have adopted her and from what we can see based on her interaction with Hoffman, he's told her none ever will if she behaves in a way he does not approve of. Indeed, all of the princesses seemed to have given up hope of rejoining society, instead building their own twisted version based around abuse and mindgames, complete with it's own insane religious beliefs.

One must remember that children can be cruel and do onto others as is done onto them. Diana is a very broken girl. Her cruelties, though many are inexcusable, are the product of poor environment. Ultimately, she is a child who was forced into her very worst fears: growing up far too fast, only to never grow up at all. What Diana wanted was to grow up and become a beautiful and kind woman, like a mermaid, untouched and untainted. Time has a way of changing us all, and not even she was blind to the pain she inflicted upon others, driving her away from her goal day by day, becoming crueler in her self-inflicted loneliness in order to maintain a strength that relying on others would never get her.

What a sad, unlucky girl.
